Broken Axle

We knew that the right front axle on my wife's car needed replacing. It was scheduled for repair on Thursday. What we didn't know is that it was so near failing and that it would fail so spectacularly. Fortunately, it happened 100 yards from our house and she was driving very slowly. Looks like big bucks to me. Sigh... We'll find out tomorrow.

The car is still in the shop, but they've finally given us an estimate, and the insurance assessor has done his thing. He decided that it was the lower tie rod that failed. The rest of the breakage was due to that. Also, it wasn't the right front axle that we were planning to replace. It was the left. Total estimate for just the right wheel repair, about $1,000. Insurance will cover most of it, minus deductible. Waiting for parts at present.

My wife says that the insurance company paid about $1200.

We're still driving that car, now with nearly 230,000 miles on it. So, yes, it CAN be fixed. Not cheap, though.
