Yes, it could be that, or it could be part of a supersecret control mechanism for dramatically altering the biosphere and climate and weather.

Note that one of the main airstreams of the upper atmosphere, normally blowing over across Europe, has flatly been stopped as a result of this spiral anomaly's tremendous power.
