They're also making a rimfire version, price not yet determined.
Eric S. Raymond Returns to the Blogosphere

Armed and Dangerous, the blog of Eric S. Raymond, has been inactive since June 12, 2006. ESR made a number of posts over the last few days, beginning with the linked post. He also has three posts on the Heller decision: A Victory for Civil Rights, Civil Disobedience, and The Heller ruling and the 2008 elections. Welcome back, Eric!

From Civil Disobedience, a report of Eric's visit to his local chief of police:

Quote:
I told him that I had been intending to speak with him for several weeks, to inform him that I intend to begin exercising my right to open carry of a firearm (quite legal in Pennsylvania and in most other states as well). I explained that I thought it best he and the local police knew of this in advance in order to avoid any unfortunate misunderstandings. See opencarry.org for background on this fast-growing form of civil-rights activism.

I also told him that, in the wake of the Heller ruling, I intend at some future point to deliberately violate the Pennsylvania state law forbidding concealed carry without a state-issued permit. The Heller ruling does not enumerate those among permissible restrictions, and I would be happy to be PA’s test case on this point. As a citizen of the United States (I explained) I believe I have not only the right but the affirmative duty to challenge unjust and unconstitutional laws; and that since the founders of the U.S. pledged their lives and fortunes and sacred honor to sign the Declaration of Independence, merely risking imprisonment to challenge this law seems to me no more than my duty.

Century Arms has a new 7.62x39 AK-style bullpup rifle. Google lists prices from $479 to $595. Holt Bodinson, in a Guns Magazine review, calls it very accurate, for an AK. Images shamelessly cropped from a sale ad.
Cold Steel African Walking Stick

I bought a Cold Steel African Walking Stick from KnifeCenter.com. $24 plus $9 shipping. Arrived in two days. Below, you can see it with the walking staff I found at a local tobacco shop, with closeups of the top and bottom. It's 37" long, and has some heft. I wouldn't want to be hit with it. Haven't tried it on a walk through the woods yet.

Remington to Acquire Marlin Firearms

Marlin Press Release - what a surprise! Remington will acquire Marlin Firearms for an undisclosed amount, pursuant to finalization of an agreement made on December 26. They expect the transaction to close by the end of January, 2008. I hope this is good news for the continuation of Marlin's fine products, and I expect that Remington will preserve the brand, but I don't like seeing independent companies disappear, especially in the firearms business.

Google finds lots of news. There's a copy of the press release on Remington's site.

Marlin’s New XL7 Bolt Action Rifle

Jeff Quinn at Gunblast - we know and love Marlin for their lever action rifles. Mr. Quinn reviews another reason to love them, 1" groups with standard Remington Core-Lokt ammo for a listed price of $326. For comparison, a Savage 111FC lists for $539. The new rifle hasn't made it yet to Marlin's firearms section.

Ruger Four-Inch .45 Colt Redhawk Revolver

Jeff Quinn at Gunblast - when loaded hot, the .45 Colt can deliver as much energy as hot .44 magnum rounds from a four-inch barrel. From the video, it doesn't look as if recoil is too bad, either. [gunblast]

Quote:
The four inch Redhawk is constructed primarily of stainless steel. The sights are black, as they should be, consisting of a fully adjustable rear and a red-ramp front. The trigger is smooth for fast double-action work, and the hammer spur is checkered for a positive grip for cocking the Redhawk for single action fire. The cylinder release pushes in for a natural and easy release of the cylinder to swing out for loading. The big cylinder holds six cartridges, and the bolt notches are offset from over the chambers for added strength. The ejector stroke is plenty long to fully eject the empty brass cases, and no sticky extraction was experienced using even the heaviest of .45 Colt ammunition available. The double action trigger pull is very smooth on this Redhawk, and measured eight pounds, eleven ounces. The single action pull measured just over five and one-half pounds. The .45 Colt four inch Redhawk weighs in at 45.2 ounces unloaded. The barrel/cylinder gap measures five one-thousandths of an inch (.005 ) on this revolver. The chamber throats measured a consistent .4515 inch. The overall quality is very good, and I have noticed an improvement in that area on all Ruger revolvers that I have seen lately. As mentioned earlier, I really like the feel of the Hogue rubber grips on this Redhawk. They handle heavy recoil comfortably, and protect the knuckle from slamming into the trigger guard upon firing the sixgun. I like this grip. I won’t go into every detail of the new four-inch .45 Redhawk here, as it is exactly like the .44 Magnum version reviewed earlier, except for the chambering, and I refer the reader to that review for more information on the details of the sixgun.

It's barrel is engraved, "The Pink Bitch." It shoots +P ammo pretty well.
