GunsCentury Arms 1975 AK Bullpup RifleSubmitted by Bill St. Clair on Sat, 2008-04-26 09:30.
Century Arms has a new 7.62x39 AK-style bullpup rifle. Google lists prices from $479 to $595. Holt Bodinson, in a Guns Magazine review, calls it very accurate, for an AK. Images shamelessly cropped from a sale ad. [guns]

Cold Steel African Walking StickSubmitted by Bill St. Clair on Fri, 2008-04-25 13:54.
I bought a Cold Steel African Walking Stick from KnifeCenter.com. $24 plus $9 shipping. Arrived in two days. Below, you can see it with the walking staff I found at a local tobacco shop, with closeups of the top and bottom. It's 37" long, and has some heft. I wouldn't want to be hit with it. Haven't tried it on a walk through the woods yet.

Remington to Acquire Marlin FirearmsSubmitted by Bill St. Clair on Wed, 2008-01-02 04:48.
Marlin Press Release - what a surprise! Remington will acquire Marlin Firearms for an undisclosed amount, pursuant to finalization of an agreement made on December 26. They expect the transaction to close by the end of January, 2008. I hope this is good news for the continuation of Marlin's fine products, and I expect that Remington will preserve the brand, but I don't like seeing independent companies disappear, especially in the firearms business. Google finds lots of news. There's a copy of the press release on Remington's site. add new comment | quote | 252 reads

Marlin’s New XL7 Bolt Action RifleSubmitted by Bill St. Clair on Wed, 2008-01-02 04:31.
Jeff Quinn at Gunblast - we know and love Marlin for their lever action rifles. Mr. Quinn reviews another reason to love them, 1" groups with standard Remington Core-Lokt ammo for a listed price of $326. For comparison, a Savage 111FC lists for $539. The new rifle hasn't made it yet to Marlin's firearms section. add new comment | quote | 493 reads

Ruger Four-Inch .45 Colt Redhawk RevolverSubmitted by Bill St. Clair on Mon, 2007-12-24 12:56.
Jeff Quinn at Gunblast - when loaded hot, the .45 Colt can deliver as much energy as hot .44 magnum rounds from a four-inch barrel. From the video, it doesn't look as if recoil is too bad, either. [gunblast] The four inch Redhawk is constructed primarily of stainless steel. The sights are black, as they should be, consisting of a fully adjustable rear and a red-ramp front. The trigger is smooth for fast double-action work, and the hammer spur is checkered for a positive grip for cocking the Redhawk for single action fire. The cylinder release pushes in for a natural and easy release of the cylinder to swing out for loading. The big cylinder holds six cartridges, and the bolt notches are offset from over the chambers for added strength. The ejector stroke is plenty long to fully eject the empty brass cases, and no sticky extraction was experienced using even the heaviest of .45 Colt ammunition available. The double action trigger pull is very smooth on this Redhawk, and measured eight pounds, eleven ounces. The single action pull measured just over five and one-half pounds. The .45 Colt four inch Redhawk weighs in at 45.2 ounces unloaded. The barrel/cylinder gap measures five one-thousandths of an inch (.005 ) on this revolver. The chamber throats measured a consistent .4515 inch. The overall quality is very good, and I have noticed an improvement in that area on all Ruger revolvers that I have seen lately. As mentioned earlier, I really like the feel of the Hogue rubber grips on this Redhawk. They handle heavy recoil comfortably, and protect the knuckle from slamming into the trigger guard upon firing the sixgun. I like this grip. I won’t go into every detail of the new four-inch .45 Redhawk here, as it is exactly like the .44 Magnum version reviewed earlier, except for the chambering, and I refer the reader to that review for more information on the details of the sixgun.

Condor Jungle BowieSubmitted by Bill St. Clair on Thu, 2007-10-11 21:22.
Smoky Mountain Knife Works sent me a catalog in the mail. I looked through it and one knife struck my fancy, the Condor Jungle Bowie pictured below with my Steve Ryan folder. Incredible tool. Reminds me of the famous Crocodile Dundee line, "That's not a knife. This is a knife." $40. Click on the image for a high-res version (1554x777, 343K). add new comment | quote | 305 reads

gun-deals.comSubmitted by Bill St. Clair on Wed, 2007-08-29 08:00.
gun-deals.com has a database of Ammo, firearms, reloading, and FFL information. They even calculate shipping on their ammo page, so you can make a real bottom-line comparison. Makes my Mail-Order Ammunition Distributors page obsolete (except you can download it and keep it on your computer). [clairefiles] add new comment | quote | 505 reads

Smith & Wesson’s 329PD .44 Magnum Lightweight RevolverSubmitted by Bill St. Clair on Sun, 2007-04-08 07:32.
Jeff Quinn at Gunblast - a review of S&W's lightweight .44 magnum revolver with titanium cylinder and scandium frame. [gunblast] The .44 Special loads were all very comfortable to shoot in the 329PD for extended range sessions, but most of the .44 Magnum loads were brutal after a few shots. The exception is the Reduced Recoil loads from Buffalo Bore. These seem to be the perfect compromise of power and controllability in the 329PD, and Buffalo Bore sells a lot of these to 329 owners. That 255 grain Keith at almost 1300 fps will do just about anything that a handgun needs to do. For social work, either the Buffalo Bore Heavy .44 Special 185 grain JHP or the Cor-Bon 165 grain JHP .44 Special load would be a good choice. Another very good load for the 329PD is the 210 grain Speer Gold Dot. The recoil is manageable, and the Gold Dot bullet expends quickly.

BlogrollFirearm NewsQuotesEvery man, woman, and responsible child has an unalienable individual, civil, Constitutional, and human right to obtain, own, and carry, openly or concealed, any weapon -- rifle, shotgun, handgun, machinegun, anything -- any time, any place, without asking anyone's permission. -- L. Neil Smith Reread that pesky first clause of the Second Amendment. It doesn't say what any of us thought it said. What it says is that infringing the right of the people to keep and bear arms is treason. What else do you call an act that endangers "the security of a free state"? And if it's treason, then it's punishable by death. I suggest due process, speedy trials, and public hangings. -- L. Neil Smith Based on 253 journal articles, 99 books, 43 government publications, and some of its own empirical work, the panel couldn't identify a single gun control regulation that reduced violent crime, suicide or accidents. -- John Lott, commenting on the National Academy of Sciences report (PDF) on gun control laws Zero Aggression Principle ("Zap") "A libertarian is a person who believes that no one has the right, under any circumstances, to initiate force against another human being, or to advocate or delegate its initiation. Those who act consistently with this principle are libertarians, whether they realize it or not. Those who fail to act consistently with it are not libertarians, regardless of what they may claim." -- L. Neil Smith Formerly called the "Non-Aggression Principle", or "NAP" Why Did It Have to be... Guns? Make no mistake: all politicians -- even those ostensibly on the side of guns and gun ownership -- hate the issue and anyone, like me, who insists on bringing it up. They hate it because it's an X-ray machine. It's a Vulcan mind-meld. It's the ultimate test to which any politician -- or political philosophy -- can be put. If a politician isn't perfectly comfortable with the idea of his average constituent, any man, woman, or responsible child, walking into a hardware store and paying cash -- for any rifle, shotgun, handgun, machinegun, anything -- without producing ID or signing one scrap of paper, he isn't your friend no matter what he tells you. If he isn't genuinely enthusiastic about his average constituent stuffing that weapon into a purse or pocket or tucking it under a coat and walking home without asking anybody's permission, he's a four-flusher, no matter what he claims. What his attitude -- toward your ownership and use of weapons -- conveys is his real attitude about you. And if he doesn't trust you, then why in the name of John Moses Browning should you trust him? -- L. Neil Smith The state can only survive as long as a majority is programmed to believe that theft isn't wrong if it's called taxation or asset forfeiture or eminent domain, that assault and kidnapping isn't wrong if it's called arrest, that mass murder isn't wrong if it's called war. -- Bill St. Clair Monthly ArchivesTTLB |
